3D printed interlocking stands for broken laptops
TL;DR: A modular 3D printed stand system that holds up to 20 laptops vertically on shelves. Includes adapter plates for different thicknesses and interlocking design for easy installation.
The Problem
When you’re repairing multiple laptops simultaneously, you need a way to organize and store them vertically to:
- See what you’re working on at a glance
- Save shelf space
- Keep laptops accessible without stacking them horizontally
The Solution: Interlocking 3D Printed Stands
This is a system of interlocking stands that I 3D printed. They give me the ability to organize laptops that need repair by holding them vertically and stacking many of them side by side on shelves.

Design Details
The Stand System
The stands are L-shaped and interlock together, allowing you to screw them into a piece of wood that sits on a metal shelf. Since they’re interlocking, you can just screw them in one after another—boom, boom, boom. The only difference is at the edges, which get a single screw connector.
Adapter Plates
For thinner laptops, I created adapter plates that slide into the stands. This ensures laptops of various thicknesses can be held securely in the same system.
Pro tip: The adapter plates make this system flexible enough to handle everything from thick gaming laptops to ultrabooks.
Known Issues & Workarounds
Durability with Heavy Laptops
On some laptops that are very heavy, the long posts tend to break off if accidentally bumped. To prevent this:
- Add some kind of support on the bottom of the posts
- Slide laptops in carefully from the side rather than forcing them in
- Be mindful of the weight distribution
The stands are mostly used by sliding laptops in sideways, which helps prevent breakage during normal use.
Installation
- Cut a piece of wood to fit your metal shelf
- Mark screw holes for the interlocking stands
- Screw in L-shaped stands one by one
- Use single-screw connectors for edge pieces
- Insert adapter plates for thinner laptops as needed
